I tried to make some sauteed kale to go with our dinner. I used a recipe that I usually use for swiss chard (it's a good recipe, I promise), but I guess I wasn't paying attention because I put the kale stems in, then realized they were never going to get tender and picked them them all out... but by that time the entire pan-full was bitter and terrible. It was so bad I let Zack spit his out. James ate his small portion (I'm not sure why) and then we threw it out. Bummer!

I love Kale, but I have found that I ONLY like it will rice vinegar. Something about the bitter kale and the sweet vinegar is delicious. Don't give up!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you had a kale fail. It happens to the best of us! I usually cut the stems off of my kale, unless they're really tiny. Then I saute them in olive oil and minced garlic for a few minutes. Near the end, I splash on a little soy sauce and a drizzle of agave nectar to cut any bitterness. Yum...and so good for you!
ReplyDeleteI agree, don't give up! We LOVE a nice, fresh, leafy kale, wilted over medium heat with olive oil, chopped garlic, kosher salt, and fresh pepper. It's a great comfort food, high in antioxidants and vitamins, and it's also a wonderful additive to soups with a savory base.
ReplyDeletei have an incredible soup recipe involving kale that i'll have to share sometime
ReplyDeleteJennifer - I'll definitely give that a try. I used something similar at the end, but it just didn't do it, I think because of the bitter stems.
ReplyDeleteCheryl - soy sauce sounds like a really nice compliment to the kale, now I want to try that too! Do you use agave nectar a lot? I haven't tried it.
itsystitch - absolutely, I won't! Thanks for commenting! Your post on your "messy fun" looked like a great project!
Gretchen - Yes, I'd like that. I never expected myself to be so obsessed with soup. The one soup I put it in has white beases and sliced sausage and It's really good. I'd love to have another!
